A man has been killed on Shetland after being struck by a car as he walked home from a night out.
Police named him last night as George Armour, 38, a fish farm worker from Scalloway.
The horrific Shetland accident happened on the B9074 road at Hamnavoe on the island of Burra around 1.50am yesterday.
It is understood Mr Armour, who was a husbandry-man with Scottish Sea Farms, had earlier attended a dance in Hamnavoe Hall which follows Burra’s annual rowing regatta. Burra is an island but is linked to the mainland by a short bridge.
The community was said to be stunned by the tragic incident.
It is understood that the car driven by a 19-year-old Shetlander and carrying three other young men, struck Mr Armour before going into a ditch further up the road.
The driver was later arrested and held in custody for a private appearance before a sheriff at Lerwick today.
A report has been prepared for the fiscal.
The road was closed for a time while police investigated and yesterday a line of cones and police tape could be seen on the road indicating where the tragic incident happened.
Local Shetland Islands Council member Davie Sandison, said: “Anything like this is a real tragedy for the entire community of Shetland.
“Of course, my thoughts go to his family and his friends.”
Tributes to Mr Armour have also flooded in on social media from shocked friends. Originally from Livingstone he moved to Shetland some time ago.
Clare-Ann Wallace said: “Can’t believe this devastating news, you were a great man. You will be missed by many. My love goes out to all your family at this sad time. Gone to soon.”
Lindsay Neale said: “Can’t belive I’m reading any of this. We’ve had many a laugh. My thoughts are with your family and friends.”
Police are calling for any witnesses to contact them on 101 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
