Police are hunting a gang of vandals who toppled a 7ft high wooden chessman in Stornoway on Lewis.
The heavy statue was a replica of one of the famous Lewis chess pieces, discovered at Uig on the west side of the island in 1831.
Together with another statue of a chessman, the hand carved giant had stood at the gates of the Woodlands Centre in Lews Castle Grounds for a number of years.
Police Scotland said the damage was believed to have taken place at around 10.42pm on Saturday.
“Police are keen to speak to five youths who were in the area at the time,” said a spokesman.
The Stornoway Trust has confirmed the chessman will be repaired.
