A young Lewis man has died three days after sustaining serious injuries in a car crash on the island.

Iain Ruairidh Gillies, 24 of Skigersta, Ness, died in Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

He was in a critical condition in the hospital after the accident in Lionel, Ness, on Saturday morning, when his green Ford Focus smashed into a stone wall.

No other vehicle was involved and he was the only person inside the car.

Mr Gillies’ heart stopped beating and volunteer firefighters from Ness – who rushed from their beds to the scene – successfully gave him cardiopulmonary resuscitation after he was taken out of the badly smashed car.

Ambulance staff took over and Mr Gillies was rushed to hospital in Stornoway. However he was airlifted to the mainland when he was stabilised.

A spokesperson for NHS Greater Glasgow said: “On behalf of the Gillies’ family, we can confirm Mr Gillies sadly passed away today.

“The family would like to thank the staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.”

Mr Gillies was enthusiastic about working with vehicles and trained as a mechanic after leaving secondary school around 2006. He was employed with Scott’s Garage in Stornoway, having previously worked with Kiwi’s Garage on New Street.

He lives in Skigersta with his girlfriend, not far from Knockaird where his parents live.

The family are well known in Ness as his father Iain is a former head teacher at Lionel School. Mr Gillies sen is also an elder in the Free Church and a Sunday school superintendent. Mr Gillies’ mother Ann works in the Bank of Scotland in Stornoway.

The couple also have a daughter, Joanna, and younger son Donald, who plays for the senior Ness football team.

Last night Joanna Gillies posted a message on a social networking website thanking people for their support.

She said: “I would just like to thank everyone on behalf of my family for all the kind words and prayers. We all feel so blessed and touched by everyone’s support.”

Police request that any witnesses to the collision contact them on 101.
