Motorists face hold-ups over water mains work

A busy Moray road will partially close to traffic next week for essential road works.

A one-way system will be in operation during the night on the eastbound lane of Edgar Road, Elgin, from the Asda roundabout, for about 330ft.

Westbound traffic will not be able to use the road during the five-day works from Monday to Friday next week, from 7pm to 7am every evening.

The restrictions have been put in place to allow work to be carried out on the water mains.

Similar works were completed on nearby New Elgin Road during the summer, causing larger disruptions as the street was com- pletely closed for six weeks.

Site notices will be put up nearer the time to warn westbound traffic on Edgar Road. Drivers are advised to use adjacent streets. Edgar Road is well used by traffic using the Asda supermarket, Elgin retail park and for access to the west end of the town.

There are no residential areas beside the section which will be closed.

Elgin south councillor John Divers said last night: “People know the work has got to be done.

“With New Elgin Road, there obviously were a few issues to start with, but they soon smoothed over. If they are doing it from 7pm-7am then it will be quieter periods.

“You would assume that traffic coming from that way, the majority of it, will be local traffic who will know their way around.”

Mr Divers added: “I don’t see it being a big issue.

“At that time of day it will be mostly local traffic.

“It may put pressure on New Elgin bridge but at night time it’s not the same issue.”
