Goalkeeper Mark Brown was relieved by the decision to abandon Saturday’s match against St Mirren with his side trailing 2-0 and claimed referee Willie Collum had no choice but to call off the contest.
The Staggies were trailing to first-half goals from Paul McGowan and Steven Thompson. But the game was abandoned seven minutes into the second half when the incessant rain made conditions too dangerous to continue.
It was a second successive abandoned match for the Staggies after last month’s Highland derby against rivals Caley Thistle was postponed after the floodlights at the Global Energy Stadium failed.
Brown said: “I wouldn’t say we are delighted it was abandoned but with us 2-0 down we weren’t too unhappy. I can understand St Mirren’s frustrations.
“The referee is impartial and he felt for the safety of the players when calling the game off was the right decision. You could see in the second half the ball wasn’t running true.
“St Mirren actually got a chance when we tried to play a pass and it got caught in the water and I had to make a save. When it gets like that it is best to abandon it.”
County have only picked up a point away from home this season and looked set to suffer another defeat on their travels before the match was called to a halt.
Referee Collum felt the St Mirren Park surface had become too dangerous. He said: “We tried to give it every opportunity to allow the match to continue. We had a 20-minute period where we inspected the field twice but for the refereeing team, the priority is the safety of the players and ultimately we deemed the field was unsafe and unplayable. We had no option but to abandon the match.”
