Weir’s incredible scoring run started on the half-hour mark and finished in the 90th when he notched his own and his side’s eighth goal with a superbly placed free kick.
It is believed Weir’s feat sets a new Highland League record, beating the six goals former Elgin City centre forward Willie Grant scored in a match in the 1960s against Fraserburgh.
The 26-year-old Thurso-based player said: “I had a couple of reasonable chances in the first half but I was unable to get shots away when I should have done. But after that everything just fell nicely for me and ended up in the back of the net.
“I am totally shocked, it is just crazy as before the game I was on eight goals and 90 minutes later I’d doubled my tally and now have 16 goals. I never set targets for goals scored during the season. For me the most important thing about this result is we have started to play some good football again. That is definitely the most pleasing thing.”
Academy manager Barry Wilson was delighted with his forward’s superb display. He said: “Gary Weir was sensational, there is no other word for it.
“He scored two in the first half and I said to him at half-time he needed to have more efforts on goal, as he has so much natural talent.”
