Aberdeen shooter Jennifer McIntosh is aiming for more Commonwealth Games gold glory after missing her Olympic target last year.
Olympians McIntosh and Jonathan Hammond and fellow north-east duo Neil Stirton and Shona Marshall are among the eight shooters and a triathlete who were yesterday named in Scotland’s Commonwealth Games squad for Glasgow.
Banchory’s Hammond, and Aberdeen’s McIntosh and Stirton are joined by Marshall, of Alford, in the squad for next year.
Hammond and McIntosh won seven medals – including four golds – in small bore rifle events at Delhi 2010.
Stirton, another gold-medallist from 2010, is joined by Ian Shaw, Angus McLeod and Marshall, who all claimed silver in their events at Delhi.
Caroline Brownlie and Sian Bruce will also hope to fire themselves to a podium place, while Scotland’s number one triathlete David McNamee will look to do likewise.
McIntosh, the small bore rifle specialist, claimed two golds and a bronze at the Delhi Commonwealths three years ago but suffered disappointment at London 2012 when she slumped to 42nd in the 10-metre air rifle event.
The 22-year-old admits she does not share the same joyous memories of the home Games enjoyed by many of her Team GB colleagues but hopes to make amends next summer.
She said: “There is a different feeling heading into these Games because they are being held in Scotland. It’s a lot closer to my heart. The Olympics are great but I’ve always had a soft spot for the Commonwealths.
“My Olympic experience probably wasn’t the same as everyone else’s in London. Most people had a fantastic time with a lot of fond memories. But for me, it wasn’t that great.
“I didn’t shoot that well. I feel I performed well but the result wasn’t good. There was a lack of experience there on my part. It was less than perfect.
“But I’m really glad that the focus has switched from looking back to London to looking ahead to Glasgow. I guess it’s a chance to redeem myself.”
Hammond was a double gold winner in Delhi and now lives in West Virginia in the United States.
He said: “Now I am selected I can begin all the planning for the winter and nest season in the lead up to Glasgow.
“Like London, it will be very special to compete at home, it probably won’t happen ever again for us in a major international competition, so that is something to savour.
“With the shooting in Carnoustie my parents, family and friends will not have far to travel and that will be quite special having all of them there regardless of the outcome.”
The nine new additions join 23 track, field and road athletes and four squash players already named in the squad in September.
Team Scotland’s chef de mission Jon Doig said: “I am extremely pleased to announce a further nine athletes selected for Team Scotland for Glasgow 2014.
