Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes will have to overcome his former side St Johnstone if he is to lead the Dons to a first League Cup final since 2000.
The Reds, who produced a tremendous display to defeat Motherwell 2-0 in Wednesday’s quarter-final at Fir Park, were paired with the Perth side in yesterday’s draw.
Caley Thistle will face Hearts in a repeat of last season’s semi-final in which Terry Butcher’s side suffered a painful penalty shootout defeat.
The Dons have been tipped as favourites to win the trophy but McInnes expects a stern test against the Saints when the sides meet in February at a venue still to be named.
He said: “I had a funny feeling we were going to get St Johnstone.
“I know St Johnstone from my time there as a player and a manager and they will be difficult opponents. We just need to make sure that when the match does come round we are in on a decent run of form as we are at the minute.
“I enjoyed my time with St Johnstone and if we weren’t to go on and win it then on a personal basis my preference would be for St Johnstone to do it. However, our club will be desperate to go on and get to that final and we are now only 90 minutes away.”
