Amec has landed a major North Sea contract, securing 140 jobs for the region.
The engineering and project management company yesterday confirmed it had been awarded a contract to provide hook-up and commissioning (HUC) support for GDF Suez’s Cygnus gas field.
Amec will be responsible for HUC on the four Cygnus platforms at the field, thought to be the Southern North Sea’s largest gas discovery in the past 25 years. The contract follows on from front-end engineering design work for the Cygnus project carried out by Amec from its London offices.
It will support 140 jobs and be delivered by Amec’s Aberdeen offshore North Sea team, which includes the company’s completions and commissioning specialists.
“We are delighted to be able to support GDF Suez to deliver this strategically important development,” said Amec managing director for brownfield and asset management in Europe, Alan Johnstone.
“This latest award recognises Amec’s ability to deliver large-scale and complex production facilities safely for our customers.”
Present work will be onshore based using existing staff, however there is scope for new job creation in the future, he said.
“As Amec works to GDF Suez’s schedule of achieving first gas in the fourth quarter of 2015, jobs will be created to complete the offshore part of the contract workscope, however that won’t be till 2015,” added Mr Johnstone.
The Cygnus field is expected to produce enough gas to meet the demand of nearly 1.5million UK homes at peak production, and represent 5% of total UK gas production by 2016.
Located on the Dogger Bank in the southern North Sea, the field will be connected to the UK mainland via a gas export pipeline to the Esmond Transportation System pipeline export, which terminates at north Norfolk.
