Police investigating a cash machine raid in Aberdeen believe the incident could be connected to a string of similar heists in the north-east.
The TSB branch at Oldmeldrum Road, Bucksburn, was targeted at about 3.30am on Sunday.
The culprits were disturbed by a taxi driver and fled the scene empty handed.
The incident happened just two weeks after the last ATM raids at Stonehaven and Inverurie.
Nine attacks have been carried out on cash machines in the last two months, with branches at Oldmeldrum, New Deer, Bieldside and Ellon also targeted.
One man from Liverpool has appeared in court in connection with three raids.
Detectives have teamed up with police in Merseyside after it emerged that six similar offences had been carried out there since August.
Last night, officers said they believe the culprits involved in the latest city attack could be living in nearby bed and breakfast accommodation, holiday lodges or caravans.
Detective Inspector Graeme Mackie, who is leading the inquiry, also released further details about a vehicle which police are searching for in connection with the crime. “We believe that a dark car, possibly an Audi A6 with the registration plates C3 KSJ, may have been involved,” he said.
“We would appeal to anyone who may have seen this vehicle to get in touch.”
DI Mackie said his team was following a positive line of inquiry – but urged anyone with any information to contact the force as soon as possible.
“We believe that this recent attempted theft from an ATM may be connected to previous targets in the area,” he said.
“We are following positive lines of inquiry to trace those responsible, but would ask for the assistance of the public to report any suspicious behaviour.”
Anyone with information is urged to call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
