Robin van Persie missed a penalty and Marouane Fellaini was sent off as Manchester United edged closer to a place in the Champions League knockout stages with a draw against Real Sociedad in Spain.
After a dismal first half, Javier Hernandez failed to tap home Shinji Kagawa’s cross from six yards before substitutes van Persie and Ashley Young took centre stage. United were awarded a penalty when Young went down under Markel Bergara’s challenge but van Persie’s effort bounced back off the woodwork and Fellaini was then red-carded for a second yellow card.
Manchester City reached the knockout stages after a 5-2 home win against CSKA Moscow.
