Scotland’s biggest public fireworks display had a sporting theme this year in honour of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Rockets lit up Glasgow Green to the sound of Eye Of The Tiger from the hit film Rocky and the signature tune from the award-winning Chariots Of Fire. The spectacular event yesterday included three Commonwealth batonbearers.
The baton has been touring Commonwealth nations ahead of the games, and last month started its tour around Australia.
Gymnast Cara Kennedy, triple-jumper Morgan McKinnon and swimmer Ruairi Kirkwood addressed the crowd after helping the baton on its journey from Buckingham Palace on October 9. They appealed to the crowd to nominate someone to share the honour and carry the baton on its return to Scotland next June.
Nine-year-old David McConnell, a pupil at Mount Florida Primary School, helped Lord Provost Sadie Docherty set off the display of around 3,000 fireworks.
Ms Docherty said: “Glasgow Fireworks is a joyous occasion which always brightens the sky and the faces of the many thousands who come to enjoy the spectacle.
“Glasgow is a world-class sporting city and our reputation owes a great deal to the thousands of unsung sporting heroes who work at grassroots level across our communities.”
Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg said: “In June and July next year the Queen’s baton will travel throughout Scotland, sharing the excitement of the countdown to the Commonwealth Games with communities across the nation.
“Being a baton bearer for this momentous occasion offers a unique chance for people across the whole of the country to be involved in and engage with the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
“It’s important that as many people as possible feel part of this special moment and we are asking everyone across Scotland to nominate the people in their streets, villages, towns or cities they would like to see honoured as baton bearers.”
