A record entry provided the Stars of the Future Show of pedigree calves from nine breeds with an excellent debut event at Stirling Agricultural Centre.
The show, now the largest of its type in the UK, had been held previously in Forfar, but chairman Adrian Ivory said the new venue had broadened its appeal and attracted new exhibitors from farther afield.
Judging was carried out in just three rings and the speed of it provided other shows with an example of just how quickly it can be done.
Overall judge Arwel Owen, a pedigree Charolais breeder and beef bull buyer with genetics firm Genus, had a difficult task selecting his continental and native senior and junior supremes and reserves.
“The overall show has been tremendous and the entry really strong,” he said.
Supreme senior continental was the Charolais, Glenericht Hilary, an August 2012 daughter of the 16,000gn Clyth Diplomat and Mornity Bonnie, from father and son Peter and Allen Drysdale, of Middle Drimmie, Blairgowrie. She was reserve at Kirriemuir and reserve female at Perth. Reserve senior went to John Elliot jun, of Roxburgh Mains, Kelso, with his Limousin, Roxburgh Homeland, a yearling son of the 40,000gn Plumtree Fantastic and Nova, dam of the award-winning Samy.
The junior supreme in the continentals was again a Charolais, this time the stylish gold heifer Falleninch Iabella, from Andrew Hornall, of Falleninch, Stirling. The 10-month-old is by the 8,000 euro Dereskit Fernando, bought at Carrick and Shannon by Mr Hornall, who put him champion while judging and who won the supreme at Stirling with him in June. Her dam, Falleninch Daniella, is a full sister to a bull sold for 8,500gn.
Stephen Illingworth, of Howgillside, Lockerbie, took the junior reserve in the continentals with his Limousin Glenrock Illusion. The 10-month-old heifer was got by AI from the 23,000gn Goldies Comet and is out of Glenrock Spangle, which has bred a succession of five-figure progeny and is the dam of Glenrock Eagle, an interbreed at the Stars of the Future in 2009.
The supremes in the native junior and senior went to Aberdeen-Angus.
Willie and William McLaren, of Netherton, Blackford, led the seniors with Netherton Blackbird M712, an 11-month-old heifer by their stock bull Rawburn Rommel E423 and out of Netherton Blackbird B172.
Ballindalloch Home Farms was reserve with its nine-month-old bull Ballindalloch Earl, brought out by Susan Johnstone. He was by Ardoyne Munro Prince, a bull bought privately from Insch breeder Henk Rennie for a five-figure sum and out of the home-bred Ballindalloch Erica. He was reserve male at Grantown in August for Ballindalloch, which has a 35-cow herd.
The reserve senior native was won by Jack Ramsay and daughter Eilidh, 17, of Millerston, Mauchline, with their Beef Shorthorn, Millerston Gretta Freya. She is by the 14,000gh Podehole Beefeater, which was champion at Ayr and out of Millerston Gretta Yvette, whose sons have sold to 6,800gn.
The junior reserve native was the 11-month-old Hereford bull Romany 1 Kryptonite, from J. Wilson and Sons, of Cowbog, Kelso. He is by Romany 1 Heavy Duty, a former senior champion at the Stars of the Future. Dam is Romany 1 Mink.
