The accident happened after 8pm on the A867 Lochmaddy to Clachan road at Strombane. It is understood that one vehicle was involved. Three fire crews – from Lochmaddy, Bayhead and Benbecula, attended the scene and helped to remove one person from the vehicle. A fire service spokeswoman said that the firefighters also made the scene safe. Two ambulances attended the scene but were not required. Police confirmed that one person was killed but refused to say whether the victim is a man or a woman. A spokesman said that more information would be available when officers had carried out their investigation. A road accident investigation team from Dingwall is on their way to the islands by ferry. The road will remain closed until their examinations are complete. Diversions are in place via the A865 Clachan-Lochmaddy road.
