Unbeaten Highlander Gary Cornish is ready to fight for a title next year, according to promoter Tommy Gilmour.
The 26-year-old heavyweight from Inverness will first fight against a yet to be confirmed opponent on the undercard of Dereck Chisora’s European championship title contest against Ondrej Pala at the Copper Box arena in London on Saturday, November 30.
Cornish, who has won all 16 of his fights, is ready to make a big step up in 2014 after training with Chisora. Gilmour said: “Gary is gaining invaluable experience sparring with a boxer of Chisora’s calibre by getting a taste of what it requires to be successful at the next level. He has been one of the busiest heavyweights in the world and it’s time to let him off the hook. He will box for a title at the end of February.”
Carl Froch accused domestic rival George Groves of preparing to “run for his life” at their final head-to-head press conference ahead of tomorrow night’s world super-middleweight title fight in Manchester.
The pair flung a succession of bad-tempered insults with Froch vowing to make Groves pay for his perceived lack of respect by “annihilating” his opponent when he puts his WBA and IBF titles on the line.
Froch mocked Groves’s detailed declaration of how he intended to take the Nottingham man’s title, insisting: “What you’ve been saying for 10 weeks is pathetic. You’ve embarrassed yourself and on Saturday night I’m going to put it right.”
