A bid has been tabled to tear down a north-east town’s abandoned swimming pool.
The ageing leisure complex at Fraserburgh’s Alexandra Terrace was closed by Aberdeenshire Council earlier this year following the opening of the town’s new £9million sports centre.
The new facility at James Ramsay Park was launched in February and was hailed as a “dream come true” for the community.
Now the local authority is getting ready to demolish the old pool building, which has since been boarded up.
Education chiefs have lodged a proposal with planning officers to clear the site.
The council’s plan for the future of the land has yet to be announced, but it is expected to be sold.
The old pool, next to Fraserburgh Academy, was built in 1969 and is the oldest facility of its kind in Aberdeenshire.
Residents mounted a campaign for new leisure facilities more than a decade ago after a rise in complaints about the state of the baths.
In 2005, the dilapidated building was closed for a wide-ranging inspection after staff reported cracked tiles, decaying concrete and puddles of water around the main tank.
Nearly 10,000 locals signed a petition calling for a new pool.
The James Ramsay Park centre was officially opened by Scottish football star Kim Little in August.
She said the new facility gave adults, young people and children the chance to try out a range of activities. As well as a 25-metre, six-lane pool the centre also features a cafe, sports hall and exclusive artwork.
Planning officers are expected to rule on the demolition plan in the coming weeks.
