Orkney is preparing for the arrival of no less than three cruise ships to its shores on Saturday.
With many passengers from the vessels likely to spend time in Kirkwall, Orkney Islands Council and police are reminding people to be aware of road closures and other safety measures planned on the day.
The MSC Magnifica and the Nautica will tie up alongside Hatston Pier, while the Ruby Princess will be at anchor in Kirkwall Bay.
Between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, Bridge Street, Albert Street, Broad Street and a section of Castle Street will be closed to all vehicles.
There are expected to be more than 7,000 passengers and crew ashore on the day, many of whom will go on organised tours and visit Kirkwall.
Brian Archibald, the council’s head of marine services, said: “For the first time we’re going to see two very large liners and a medium sized cruise ship calling into Orkney on the same day. We have hosted successful visits of two large ships before, but we now need to make some extra preparations to ensure a successful three ship visit.
“With so many additional people in the town it’s going to be exceptionally busy and in discussion with the police we’re agreed on a number of road closures. We’ve tried to minimise the disruption for drivers, but some is inevitable.
“There may also be an impact on public transport. Bus passengers can expect some delays to services in Kirkwall as the Bus Station and Travel Centre will be busy and we’d advise that they check with bus operators about any route changes around the road closures.”
During the time when the road closures are in force, all buses, except the airport bus, will only turn right from West Castle Street onto Junction Road.
At this time, the zebra crossings on Junction Road and Shore Street will have crossing attendants to provide help and advice as needed.
