Comedian Robert Brydon has told the Queen he hoped his recently awarded MBE was more for comedy than charity.
The Gavin And Stacey star was one of 80 people who Her Majesty honoured at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle yesterday.
Mr Brydon said while he spoke about last year’s Jubilee concert, the first thing the Queen asked him was why he thought he received the honour, which was awarded for services to comedy, broadcasting and charity.
“She said ‘Do you mostly think this is for comedy?’ and I said ‘I hope so’,” he said.
The 48-year-old comedian said the award, which came as a surprise, did give him time to stop and reflect on the impact he has had on the British entertainment industry.
“It does but it’s hard to say that without sounding like a conceited old…” he laughed, before trailing off.
“Generally I think it’s important to take stock because in my line of work you’re always rushing off to the next thing, there’s no guarantees in what I do.
“You live or die by whether people want to pay you to entertain them.”
