European curling honours for Aberdeen student Macleod

European curling honours for Aberdeen student Macleod

A Robert Gordon University student swept his way to his first championship victory in a European curling competition.

Scott Macleod, who is studying for a masters in construction project management, helped his team win the Edinburgh International championship at the Murrayfield rink. The 25-year-old played alongside team-mates David Edwards, John Penny and Colin Campbell to beat Ross McCleary, James Stark, Craig Gudmundsson and Gavin Baird 9-3 in a one-sided European Tour final.

The winning team collected the trophy after competing alongside other sides on the Champions Curling Tour from the Czech Republic, Latvia, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Finland, Sweden, Slovakia, Scotland, Poland and the Netherlands.

Macleod said: “The team played well all weekend and to win the champion- ship final is a fantastic feeling. We didn’t have it all our own way after losing an early game but we fought our way back with wins over very strong teams to get into the playoff stages which boosted our confidence.

“Ross McCleary is an excellent curler and we knew it would be a good final. His team knocked out the British Olympic team in the quarter-finals so they were on form. We were able to establish a 5-0 lead after two ends, which is very difficult to come back from, and closed the match out 9-3.”

Macleod is now eyeing success at the forthcoming Scottish men’s champion- ships in February, the winner of which will represent Scotland in the world championships in Beijing.
