McInnes on red alert to avoid cup calamity

McInnes on red alert to avoid cup calamity

The Dons have scored seven goal without reply against Partick Thistle in their two meetings this season, but manager Derek McInnes has warned his side against complacency ahead of Sunday’s Scottish Cup tie.

The sides meet in the fourth round of the competition at Firhill on Sunday in one of four all-Premiership contests.

McInnes’ side have looked a cut above last season’s First Division champions and will start the match as favourites to progress on Sunday, despite Thistle holding home advantage.

The Jags are on a four-game losing streak but McInnes has cautioned his players against taking Alan Archibald’s side lightly.

He said: “We are not good enough to go into any game complacent.

“We have got to make sure we are up to speed from the first minute and show the same focus we displayed in our previous two games.

“We want to get back to winning ways after losing to Hearts and Celtic and hopefully we can do that on Sunday.

“We expect a tough match. Partick Thistle aren’t on the best run of form at the minute but they are still a good side with good players so we expect nothing other than a difficult game.”

The Dons go into the match on the back of consecutive 3-1 defeats to Celtic and Hearts, although McInnes’ side were very unfortunate to end up with nothing after commendable performances in both games.

The Aberdeen manager added: “We were extremely disappointed not to take anything from the Celtic match. There wasn’t much in the game but we needed to see the game out and take our chances when the score was 1-1. In the end, it was Celtic’s determination to win which got them over the finishing line but there were positives we can take from the match.

“That game has gone now and we just have to focus on Partick Thistle.

“We are in the semi-finals of one cup competition and we want to try to get ourselves through into the next round of the Scottish Cup.

“We want to do well on all fronts and Sunday gives us an opportunity to do that.”

Aberdeen midfielder Jonny Hayes is a major doubt for the match because of a hamstring injury but Barry Robson returns to the squad after being suspended for the defeat at Celtic Park while Willo Flood will miss out through his hamstring injury.
