Workers fear that their jobs could be at risk if a contract to provide towing services in Orkney is lost by their company.
One of Orkney Towage’s major clients, Talisman Sinopec Energy UK Limited (TSEUK), is thought to be considering using a different provider some time in the future.
Orkney Islands Council has been informed by the company that it wishes to test the market for the provision of towage services for Flotta tanker operations.
A council spokesman said: “Although the company provides towage services for other clients, in local waters and further afield, this is a matter of concern for ourselves and for Orkney Towage.
“We have advised trade union representatives of the crews who operate the company’s three tugs. A meeting for all staff will be held next month.
“We are continuing discussions with TSEUK and would stress that no decisions have been taken by the council or by the board of Orkney
Towage on the future of the company and the services it provides.”
Talisman, meanwhile, confirmed that it is reviewing its requirements for long-term towage services for its Flotta Terminal.
“Alongside our continued discussions with Orkney Islands Council, we have taken the decision to test the market for the provision of towage services for Flotta tanker operations,” a spokesman said.
