The 13-year-old was taken to hospital in Stornoway by Coastguard helicopter after being rescued from Scarista beach on Harris. A spokesman for the police said that the rescue had involved a “quicksand situation”. It is understood that the boy had sunk up to his neck in the sand. Emergency services were sent to the scene after being called to the beach at 3.44pm today. The police spokesman said: “A teenage man appears to have become trapped in sand. “It appears to be a quicksand situation, there’s no other way of describing it. “All of the blue light services attended as well as local Coastguard, who managed to rescue him. “The casualty has now been taken to Western Isles Hospital.”
