Finance Secretary John Swinney and Advocate General Jim Wallace are taking part in an independence debate organised by the Church of Scotland.
The dialogue in Glasgow on September 3 will be streamed live online to 10 satellite events being held around the country which will each incorporate it into their own discussions.
A Kirk spokesman said people in Inverness and possibly Aberdeen will be able to take part.
The moderator of the Kirk’s General Assembly the Rt Rev John Chalmers will chair the debate between Mr Swinney and Lord Wallace of Tankerness QC, a Liberal Democrat peer and former deputy first minister.
Also on the panel will be the Rev Sally Foster Fulton, convener of the Church of Scotland’s church and society council, and Rev Martin Johnstone, chief executive of a group called Faith in Community Scotland.
Mr Chalmers said: “How we conduct our discussions in the lead up to this vote will have a significant influence on how we build unity after we know the result.
“There is no hiding from it – this is one of the biggest decisions in Scotland’s history and each of us must be ready to play our part in making it.”
The audience will be made up of Kirk members, as well as leaders from civic life and other religious denominations and faith groups.
The Church, as an organisation, is maintaining a neutral stance in the debate.
