Two north-east MSPs went head-to-head in an independence referendum debate in Aberdeen last night.
Labour’s Lewis Macdonald and Mark McDonald of the SNP appeared at an event in the Palm Court Hotel organised by teachers union Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS).
Representing the Better Together and Yes Scotland campaigns respectively, the men were asked questions about the future of education in Scotland in the event of a yes or no vote.
EIS general secretary Larry Flanagan said: “Scotland’s leading union for teachers and lecturers, is keen to facilitate meaningful consideration of the arguments and issues being pursued and to contribute to a high quality debate.
“Recognising the broad range of views that our members hold, the EIS itself has not adopted a position of either supporting or opposing independence in the referendum.
“We feel, however, that it is important to consider the pros and cons of any future constitutional settlement from the perspective of education and to interrogate both the Better Together and the Yes Scotland campaigns.”
