The next generation of media gurus have been shown the industry ropes as part of a communications consultancy’s newly-launched summer school programme.
Aberdeen-based Bread PR has invited three aspiring youngsters with a keen interest in marketing and communications to work on a real-life charity project and industry partnership, while learning practical media industry skills in the process.
As part of the week-long course, the media-savvy students took part in a variety of projects to boost their CVs as they work to promote a new partnership for charity Aberlour Child Care Trust.
Natalie Charlton, 22, has recently graduated from Robert Gordon University (RGU) with a degree in communications and PR, while 21-year-old Catherine Gordon is nearing the end of her course in politics and history at Aberdeen University, and Daniel Stevenson, 20, is in his third-year studying management with marketing at RGU.
Louise Nicolson, Bread’s managing director, said: “The summer school is a programme we have launched to empower the next generation by giving them a taste of the media industry and allowing them to build their CV in a real-life working environment.
“It’s also a chance to spot talent for Bread’s future. Our new recruits have shown great potential. They are enthusiastic and are doing a fantastic job working on their own initiative. After the success of this very first summer we will run the programme every year.”
All three recruits have demonstrated a keen interest in learning more practical experiences of working within the communications field and have spent their time at Bread writing, filming, editing and honing their radio interview technique.
Natalie said: “This work placement has been fantastic experience and has allowed me to gain practical knowledge of the industry and how it works. I’ve really enjoyed working at Bread and will hopefully put these skills to good use in the future.”
