The tiny primary school on Raasay is appealing for scenic images of the Hebridean island for a commemorative calendar to mark its 150th anniversary.
Raasay Primary School overlooks the Sound of Raasay and the Cuillin Hills of Skye, and there is known to have been a school on the site since the early 19th century – the admission register dates back to 1875.
The building is also of considerable interest because it was built with stone taken from the site of a nearby Pictish broch, the remains of which can still be seen.
The original school building contains one main classroom, a library area, a small computer room and the canteen area. The pupil toilets and the office were added in the 1960s and a new nursery extension was opened in January 2008.
Wilma Duncan, who is head teacher at the 10-pupil school, said they were looking for any photographs of views of Raasay or from Raasay taken at different times of the year so appropriate images could be included for each season.
She said: “It would be interesting to see what photographic ‘gems’ exist within the community and to bring these together to form a keepsake to sell, which would commemorate 150 years of Raasay Public/Primary School.”
She added that they would also be interested in older images of the island taken at any time since 1875 as these could also be incorporated in the calendar and she stressed that black and white and sepia prints would be fine.
Anyone with any images that may be suitable for inclusion is asked to contact the school by Monday September 15.
Ms Duncan said: “If we get a good haul within the timeframe, then we’ll go ahead and make a 2015 calendar, otherwise we’ll keep the project open and create a 2016 calendar instead, which we would sell next year.”
