Old pictures of a town can say a lot about the community that live there.
These seven picture comparisons show iconic spots like the waterfront filled with peaceful demonstrators, men admiring their latest fishing catch and children playing at McCaig’s Tower.
If you have any old photos of your own, scan and send them into webpix@ajl.co.uk to be featured.
1) The waterfront
Nearly 1,000 people rallied at Oban seafront in a bid to save Drummore Special School in 1990. The image below looks onto the spot from the other side of the harbour.
2) The fire station
This snap of Oban Fire Station from 1978 is a little faded, but that’s the joy of old photographs – they’re rustic!
3) Ganavan Bay
People make their way to Ganavan beach on what looks like a day of sun and blue skies.
4) McCaig’s Tower
This black and white picture shows McCaig’s Tower in all its glory with children enjoying the scenery in the photo below.
5) Oban Pool
We’re loving the retro cars parked outside what was Oban pool, now Atlantis Leisure Centre.
6) Station Square
Station Square was described as a “jollified telephone booth” in 1990 while undergoing huge development. What do you think of it now it’s complete?
7) The waterfront
Dressed in tartan, onlookers admire the latest prawn catch in 1978, with fantastic views in the background. The photo below shows the waterfront on a bright sunny day.
