A north-east MP has said it has “always been clear” there was a strong support the union in Aberdeenshire.
The Rt Hon Sir Malcolm Bruce told the Press and Journal that the people of the north-east have never been convinced by the yes campaigners.
And he said that given the sample ballot papers he had seen so far this morning he was confident the no voters had come out in force to vote.
He said: “We have only had the early samples but they were pretty good so I never understood this argument that there was this movement from no to yes.
“We have been saying for the last several weeks this is not what we are getting. We have been seeing clear, strong nos.
“They are not buying the independence case. The message we have been trying to get through to people is if you walk away from the UK you walk away from a lot of institutions we take for granted and part of what defines us as British.”
