Groundskeeper Willie admits defeat to the No campaign

The world’s most famous animated Scot has admitted defeat to the No campaign following the results of the independence referendum.

During last week’s referendum campaigning, fans of The Simpsons were treated to a rousing call to arms by Springfield Elementary school’s resident janitor, Groundskeeper Willie.

A video was posted on the Simpsons Facebook page, featuring Willie imploring all Scots that could vote to say yes to independence, brandishing a birthmark on his chest reading “Aye or Die!” in Saltire-blue pen.

Now, since the vote came back now, Willie – who hails from Kirkwall – has appeared again on the social networking page, with the blue birthmark replaced with a red picture of the Queen and his begrudging love of her.

Amongst the empty whisky bottles littering the floor around Willie, the fictional “Scottish Independence” newspaper and its headline of “Curse Ye Gordon Brown”, can be seen, a nod to former prime minister Mr Brown’s involvement in the final few days of the campaign.

Despite the proud Orcadian’s disappointment in the result, Willie would not have been legally allowed to vote due to him living in Springfield, America his whole life, and the fact that he is a fictional yellow cartoon.
