A Stornoway man has been placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years after he broke a court order banning him from approaching young girls.
Ronald Campbell, 25, of 38 Plantation Road, Stornoway, was originally placed on the sex offenders register last year for engaging in sexual activity with a female aged under 16 years.
And in May, a civil court order was imposed at Stornoway Sheriff Court banning him from communicating with any girl aged under 16.
But in July, he spoke to a 13-year-old at Bayhead, Stornoway, and invited her to a nearby cafe – an encounter which was filmed on CCTV.
Campbell admitted breaching the order at Stornoway Sheriff Court yesterday.
Solicitor John McGeechan said it was an accidental conversation and he had now advised his client to be “rude and walk away” if a similar situation arose again.
Campbell had since spent 77 days in custody, which had “sharpened his lax attitude”, said the lawyer.
Campbell also admitted failing to notify Stornoway police that he had returned to the island after being released from Inverness Prison after serving a sentence for an assault.
In October last year he was jailed after admitting he pushed, punched, kicked and slapped a woman on the head and body and also seized her by the throat.
He was freed in January but did not tell police his new address within the three-day window allowed for sex offenders.
Sheriff David Sutherland jailed Campbell for eight months for the offences and placed him on the sex offenders register.
Under the rules, his sentence means he will remain on the register for 10 years.
