They were discarded outside Wick Coastguard office in full view of groups of passers by which included children. If activated in a public place, these items can potentially cause serious injury and damage to property. The incident happened some time between Thursday and Friday last week. Police and HM Coastguard are urging members of the public to ensure such items are disposed of safely, ideally through licensed selling agents. If selling agents are not available then the Coastguard can offer suitable advice on disposal. Police are also reminding members of the public that recklessly disposing of flares and smoke markers may result in prosecution. Anyone with information about the incident should contact Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or go online at http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org/ .
