Lewis Bonfire organisers’ decision to burn an Alex Salmond effigy has caused outrage across the country – with hundreds of people taking to Twitter to vent their fury.
The Salmond effigy shows the Scottish First Minister displaying the number 45 (a representation of the percentage of Scottish voters who supported independence) with Nessie in the background and all three elements have angered the Scottish public – particularly the inclusion of poor Nessie!
Hi East Sussex, we may be 45% but 100% won't forgive you for Nessie! RT@EastSussexCC Salmond & Nessie for the bonfire http://t.co/jZQpokt9nz

The Lewes bonfire is burning Alex Salmond tonight. Not sure this is the spirit of reconciliation the UK needs… http://t.co/N75in5Hb0G

@EastSussexCC Is it okay for Scottish folk to come to your bonfire, or will they get chucked on with Salmond and Nessie?

An 'Alex Salmond' guy being burnt on a bonfire in East Sussex, imagine the furore if that was up here and it was David Cameron or the Queen.

However, some tweeters did see a funny side and offered more light hearted tweets.

The way I see it, the Salmond effigy at #Lewes shows we rattled Middle England. Let's keep rattling! #Yes

Salmond is not Lewes’ first bonfire victim…
