A causeway carrying a main road between five of Orkney’s islands is currently closed to all traffic due to bad weather.
Churchill Barrier number two, which links Lamb Holm to Glimps Holm, was shut off at about 9.25am this morning because of high winds blowing water onto the road at high tide.
The A961 road is the only route from Lamb Holm south via the islets of Glimps Holm to Burray and South Ronaldsay.
It is one of four causeways linking the chain of small islands together with the mainland.
The barriers were constructed during World War II to protect the Royal Navy’s fleet at Scapa Flow.
They were ordered to be built by Winston Churchill in late 1939, one month after a German U-Boat entered the bay and torpedoed HMS Royal Oak, killing 833 crew members.
A spokesman for Orkney Islands Council said: “The high tide point comes twice each day. If the wind is in a particular direction and it blows hard then water spray onto the road.”
A police spokesman said: “Barrier two is closed due to weather. Road closed signs are in place just now.”
