A lorry which crashed on the A82 Inverness-Fort William road, blocking it for more than 11 hours, was carrying empty gas cylinders, police have confirmed.
The lorry overturned south of Urquhart Castle, near Drumnadrochit, on the trunk road on Friday afternoon.
A large exclusion zone was placed around the vehicle because of fears that the containers could explode.
The road was also closed in both directions and five fire crews were sent to the scene.
The 51-year-old male driver was taken to Raigmore Hospital, in Inverness, by ambulance and was kept in overnight for treatment.
The road finally reopened at 1.30am on Saturday after the truck and cylinders were removed from the scene.
Police confirmed at the weekend that the gas cylinders were empty.
Inspector Neil Lumsden, of the north’s road policing unit, said: “An initial cordon was put in place until we could establish what the lorry load was.
“This was to ensure the safety of the public and all the emergency services involved in the incident.”
He added that it was a complex recovery operation.
Officers said the incident was still being investigated. Motorists were diverted along the south side of Loch Ness, via the B862 Fort Augustus-Inverness road.
