Universities get ready to lock oars on the Dee in March

The date for the 2014 Aberdeen Asset Management Universities’ Boat Race has been confirmed as Saturday, March 1.

Robert Gordon University will be hoping to make it three wins in succession in the 19th race between the city’s two universities after winning this year’s race along the River Dee by two-and-a-half lengths – although Aberdeen University have dominated the series with 14 wins.

The race takes place over a 3.5km stretch between the Bridge of Dee and Aberdeen Boat Club.

Aberdeen University Boat Club president Lauren Cammaert, who is originally from Newfoundland, Canada but moved to Aberdeen when she was eight, is hopeful she can lead her university back to winning ways.

The 23-year-old, who studies medicine, said: “This may be my first year as president but it’s my third year involved in the boat race and I am determined to lead my crew, and ultimately Aberdeen University, to victory for the 15th time.”

Her Robert Gordon University Boat Club counterpart Gillian Paterson, 21, is hopeful RGU can make it three on the bounce.

The forensic and analytical science student said: “It’s only my second appearance in the boat race, but for 2014 I think we have the upper hand.

“We’ve already had a two-year winning streak and together, I’m certain that we can make it a hat-trick.”

Martin Gilbert, chief executive of sponsors Aberdeen Asset Management, was pleased for his firm to support Aberdeen’s equivalent of the Oxford against Cambridge boat race once again. He said: “The turnout for the 2013 race was superb, with more supporters showing their colours than ever before.

“Aberdeen Asset Management is proud to back a major sporting event in the city of Aberdeen that receives such enthusiastic local support. The young, athletic talent showcased each year never fails to surprise me and I’m sure 2014 will be no different.”
