A man was cut free from his car and taken to hospital with serious head injuries after a collision with a lorry at an accident blackspot in Aberdeenshire.
A stretch of the B997 Balmedie to Dyce road was shut following the crash yesterday, at around 12.15pm.
The driver of the Volkswagen Polo was trapped in his vehicle following the accident on Scotstown Road at the Parkhill Crossroads.
Traffic was diverted for three hours as the delicate operation to remove the driver from the car got under way.
He was freed by firefighters and transferred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
While his injuries are described as serious, they are not thought to be life-threatening. The lorry driver did not require any medical treatment.
A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said that just one casualty was dealt with.
The crash is the latest in a series of accidents on the B997 this year. Safety on the road has been an ongoing concern for residents in the area, with the issue discussed at Newmachar Community Council last week.
Councillor Martin Ford, of East Garioch ward, said talks were ongoing with Aberdeenshire Council to improve safety at the junction.
He said: “Firstly, I am sad to hear about the collision and my best wishes are with those affected. There have been concerns locally about this junction and a number of accidents over the years.”
Mr Ford said problems arose due to the junction being busy and drivers waiting in the middle of the road to turn right. He said speed was also an issue, adding: “I know that representations have been made to the council over whether there is scope for increased signage.”
The road surface of the B997 at Scotstown Road, to the south of yesterday’s crash scene, has been treated to cut the number of crashes.
