Edinburgh scored a notable Pro12 win at Murrayfield last night to set themselves up for the first leg of the 1872 Cup with Glasgow at home on Boxing Day.
However, the defeat marked a second setback for Leinster, who are in action at home to Ulster on Thursday, after their shock home defeat by Northampton in the Heineken Cup.
Edinburgh, playing with confidence that had been missing for some time, had the more effective pack that played the conditions ideally, backed up by sensible kicking from hand by Greig Tonks at stand off that kept play in the right area.
Edinburgh scored the only try, in the first half, through winger Doug Fife. Greig Laidlaw converted and added a penalty in each half.
Leinster’s points came from a penalty in each half from Ian Madigan.
With the minimal crowd squeezed up at the back of lower tier of seating seeking shelter, Edinburgh kicked off in a downpour that had already been on for several hours.
From the back of the stand the strong wind seemed to be behind Edinburgh but then changed to favour one side and then the other unpredictably.
