PART of a north-east town was sealed off by police last night after a workplace Christmas party turned to tragedy.
Detectives are investigating a serious assault that led to a fatal road accident involving a Good Samaritan in Fraserburgh.
A young man was left with life-threatening injuries after he was attacked in the town’s Maconochie Road just after 6pm.
And a witness who ran across the street to go to the man’s aid was struck by a passing car, and died at the scene.
The assault victim was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
His alleged attacker was being held by police last night. Investigators could not confirm if a knife had been used in the attack.
All three men were understood to be part of a larger group who had earlier attended a Christmas celebration at nearby haulage firm Gray and Adam.
Last night, a large stretch of road outside the business was locked down by police.
Banff-based inspector Grant McCutcheon said the two incidents were connected but were being investigated separately. “CID officers are investigating the assault and there is one man in custody in connection with that,” he said. “The victim has been taken to hospital in Aberdeen with serious, life-threatening injuries.
“The man who was involved in the road traffic collision was not directly involved in the assault.
“We believe they were part of a larger group. There would have been a lot of people in this area at the time.”
The scene of the collision was sealed off for several hours.
Officers set up a blockade at a roundabout at the town’s main southern approach, near the Tesco store.
Police vehicles arrived at the scene throughout the night.
About a dozen uniformed officers were drafted in around 8.30pm to help search the area and carry out door-to-door inquiries.
