A major clean up was under way in the north yesterday after the storm which caused misery for Christmas travellers.
But further bad weather is on the way and forecasters have issued weather warnings for tomorrow.
Winds of more than 70mph caused widespread disruption across the north on Christmas Eve, causing flights and ferry services to be cancelled and hitting the power supplies to more than 3,000 homes.
The Western Isles was one of the worst affected areas and ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne planned to put on a Christmas Day sailing between Skye, North Uist and Harris to help get stranded islanders home.
Midnight church services in the islands were cancelled because of safety fears and the wind tore part of the roof from Thurso High School.
The Met Office warned that storm conditions are expected to return tomorrow.
It issued a yellow “be aware” warning for rain in the southern Highlands and Argyll and for high winds in Orkney and Shetland.
There could be gusts of up to 80mph on the coasts and over high ground while almost two inches of rain is expected in parts of the Highlands, and it could fall as snow on higher ground.
A Met Office forecaster said: “The public should be aware of the potential for disruption, especially where ground is already saturated and where high winds are combined with heavy rainfall.”
He added that the weather was expected to be less intense and cause less severe disruption than on Christmas Eve.
Tomorrow’s storm could bring further misery for travellers affected by the miserable Christmas Eve weather.
Winds of up to 75mph on the Western Isles led to the cancellation of the majority of the ferry services and several flights to the northern and Western Isles on Christmas Eve.
Ferry services cancelled included the Ullapool-Stornoway route, services to South and North Uist, Harris, Skye, the Small Isles, Orkney and the Corran ferry.
Caledonian MacBrayne organised a mercy mission from Uig-Lochmaddy-Tarbert on Christmas Day to get stranded islanders home.
Flights between Kirkwall and Inverness, North Ronaldsay, Sanday, Stronsay, Westray and Papa Westray were called off and there were also delays and cancellations at Islay, Benbecula and Wick airports.
Fallen trees blocked roads in Sutherland and Easter Ross, and the Baleshare causeway on Uist was closed for a short period.
