A north-east coastal village is expected to welcome hundreds of visitors this weekend to celebrate its New Year fireworks display.
One of the country’s top pyrotechnicians will be joined by fire-dancers to warm up the atmosphere at Johnshaven on Sunday night, with the harbour providing the perfect backdrop to the spectacular community event.
A barbecue will also keep visitors fed and watered during the event, which is funded solely by donations collected by villagers over the course of the year. The fireworks have long been held at the end of January after they were postponed one year due to icy conditions.
Bobby Still, owner of the Ship Inn, said: “It gives people something to look forward to at the end of the month.
“The fireworks are just beautiful and it is quite a sight with the dark sky, the water and the fire dancers on the pier. I would really encourage people to come down and enjoy this fantastic community night.”
The fireworks display will be set by Mark Copland, owner of Fireworx Scotland in Inverurie.
Mr Copland, who recently came second in the British Fireworks Championships, has supplied the kit for the New Year display at the London Eye and various Hogmanay shows across Scotland, but said the Johnshaven event was one of his favourites.
He said: “I love doing the Johnshaven show. We get well looked after there and that is what it is about – the community coming together.”
The barbecue is due to start at 6.30pm on Sunday, with the dancers on the pier at 7pm and the fireworks scheduled for 7.30pm.
