Huge waves lashed vehicles driving along the Braighe Road on Lewis as severe weather hit the Western Isles this morning.
Wild seas slammed into the sea wall and crashed over cars and buses on the A866 carriageway connecting the peninsula of Point with the rest of Lewis.
Motorists dodged debris and blasts of seawater as they negotiated the route, about three miles outside Stornoway.
The road was clear at the scheduled time for high tide but a storm surge, driven by strong south westerly winds, resulted in breaking waves about an hour later.
The force of the sea intensified within minutes creating a sudden hazardous situation.
Patrolling police stopped traffic and closed the road until the tide receded.
Chief Inspector Gordon Macleod of the Western Isles division said officers were monitoring the roadway as the tide rose.
He pointed out: “The officers were continually risk assessing the situation and decided to close it.”
Meanwhile, a number of Lewis villages suffered power cuts in yesterday’s storm. Hydro workers braved high winds and heavy rain to restore electricity supplies to the affected parts of Uig as well the Melbost area.
