Aberdeen Grammar captain Greig Ryan will be the centre of attention once more when his side travels to Cupar to play Howe of Fife in the Caledonia Cup tomorrow.
The flanker played at centre as Grammar ran out 64-24 winners at Aber- deenshire in the cup and impressed coach Kevin Wyness so much he will be staying there tomorrow.
Ryan knows the change of position means a change in approach but he insists he is comfortable with the switch.
He said: “I must have done something right against Aberdeenshire last week if the coach wants me to play there again.
“It worked really well last week but I’m only as good as the players around me and I was fortunate to have strong support. I’ve played in a similar role in sevens rugby and I played in the backs a lot when I was younger so I know what I have to do there.
“It is a different task from playing flanker as I can’t go hunting the ball and smashing everything in sight. It’s important I keep my discipline and don’t get caught out of position.” Following Grammar’s win at Shire, tomorrow’s game has effectively become a cup final to decide who wins the regional cup and progresses to the national cup quarter-finals.
Ryan knows Champion- ship B club Howe of Fife, who lead the table from Grammar by two points after beating National League outfit Dundee High School FPs, will be full of confidence as they go in search of another scalp against Premiership opponents.
He added: “It’s winner take all in this game and that will ensure there is a really competitive edge.
“Howe of Fife are at home and they will be really up for it especially after beating Dundee. We’ve played them three years in a row and they’ve improved in every game against us so we know it’s going to a tough, physical game.
“But we want to win the group and give ourselves a platform for crucial league games against Currie and Heriot’s. Our player Will Wardlaw always raises his game when he faces his hometown club and I’m sure he will be looking forward to this one.”
