Seafood Scotland’s Seafood in Schools programme rolled into Meldrum Academy, Oldmeldrum yesterday.
About 350 local primary and secondary school pupils and their teachers are taking part in two days of workshops aimed at educating youngsters about where seafood comes from, how healthy it is to eat and how it gets to their plates.
One of the workshops sees Lunar Group fisherman John Stephen, of the Harvester PD98, working alongside Seafood in Schools’ local coordinator Maria Anderson.
They are letting youngsters see and handle a variety of fresh and live species, including crab, lobster, langoustine, cod, haddock, monkfish and squid, and to learn how they are caught, landed and processed.
Chefs Alex Hay and Calum Hall, of Raemoir House Hotel and Meldrum House Hotel respectively, are cooking seafood, while Fish for Health’s Catriona Frankitti is running a workshop on health and wellbeing. Each participating class will carry out a project, based on seafood.
“In this way we ensure that Seafood in Schools and the messages it teaches, have a very wide reach,” said programme manager Nicki Holmyard.
