One of Aberdeen’s busiest roads could be widened in an effort to ease congestion.
The city council is planning to buy land at the former Craiginches Prison on Wellington Road, Torry.
If the land is successfully purchased, the authority hopes to dual that section, by adding another southbound lane close to the roundabout which connects with South Esplanade West.
The council’s communities, housing and infrastructure committee will discuss the proposals at a meeting next month.
Committee convener, councillor Neil Cooney, said: “We couldn’t look at this while the prison was still there but we want to look at getting the land before anymore is done with the site.
“It’s a real pinchpoint for traffic in the city and we could do with a second lane there and widening and realigning the road.
“Wellington Road is fairly frustrating at the present moment, there are more and more developments along that road.
“It would ease congestion which is particularly bad in the morning rush hour.”
Meanwhile, a housing association has earmarked the prison site for a residential development.
Sanctuary Scotland hopes to transform the disused site into low-cost homes with the help of government funding.
Craiginches Prison, along with HMP Peterhead, was closed in January of this year as part of a wider shake-up of prison services across the north-east which led to the brand new HMP Grampian being built.
The demolition of the old city prison building is expected to begin next month.
