Dons hot for dream double

Dons hot for dream double

Barry Robson is determined to prove he is worth a new deal at Aberdeen after helping the Dons dump Scottish Cup holders Celtic out of the competition.

The Dons followed up the previous week’s 4-0 League Cup semi-final victory against St Johnstone by beating Celtic at Parkhead to leave their supporters dreaming of a cup double.

Ten consecutive defeats at Celtic Park had looked set to become 11 when Anthony Stokes gave the hosts an early lead but Dons captain Russell Anderson restored parity just before the break and Peter Pawlett netted the winner five minutes after the restart to cap an excellent team performance.

Inverurie’s Robson produced a man-of-the-match performance against the Hoops, dominating the midfield alongside Willo Flood.

The Scotland international’s deal expires at the end of the season but he is hopeful of remaining at Pittodrie for at least one more term.

He said: “I’m 35 but I still feel good. I have looked after myself, so, hopefully, I can keep going after this.

“I have got this season to see where we can get and perhaps I can go another year after that. It is up to me to keep producing.

“We haven’t had time to discuss my future – we have had too many games. It has been hectic.”

Aberdeen’s magnificent start to February continued in style at Celtic Park but Robson has warned his team-mates the hardest challenges are still to come.

He said: “You can’t get carried away. We have won a game and now let’s see what we can do in the next round.

“The challenge for us is to show we have the mentality, strength and desire. If you have those qualities you will come out on top.

“It is going to be tough and we have a long road ahead. The hardest games are coming up as fatigue and injuries begin to set in. We have to stick together and see what we can produce.”

Aberdeen’s reward for beating the Hoops is a home quarter-final tie against Championship side Dumbarton.

Robson added: “I’m delighted we’ve got a home draw.

“We’ve had four games away in the cup competitions this season, so to be at home is great.

“It will be a tough game, as all cup ties are, but we’re pleased to be at home.”
