A Skye man has died after contracting swine flu.
NHS Highland confirmed yesterday that a man had died from the virus, but refused to release any further details.
Former postman Colin Campbell, 58, was admitted to hospital with a high fever at the end of last month and was treated in Portree Community Hospital for suspected pneumonia.
His condition deteriorated and he was being transferred to Broadford Hospital on Skye when he had a heart attack en route and was airlifted to the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow.
He was diagnosed with swine flu and died on Monday.
His widow, Peggy, was too upset to speak about the tragedy yesterday and was being comforted by family and friends.
Mr Campbell, who owned and ran the seven-acre Kinloch Campsite in Dunvegan with his wife, had no children.
Skye councillor Drew Millar said the community was “devastated” by the death.
He said: “He was an extremely hard-working guy, very popular and friendly.”
A family friend said: “He didn’t have any contact with animals and the couple had not been abroad recently.”
Dr Ken Oates, consultant in public health for NHS Highland, said: “The H1N1 virus, so-called swine flu, is just one of the routine flu strains that circulate every winter now.
“It causes the same type of symptoms and illness as any other strain of flu,” added Dr Oates.
