Dons travel fired up by the wrath of Rooney

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has backed Adam Rooney to take his frustration out on St Mirren at Paisley tomorrow.

Dons attacker Rooney has made a fine start to his Aberdeen career, scoring twice in his first three matches.

But it seems two goals in three games is not enough for the Irishman.

Rooney failed to score in the 2-1 win at Celtic in the Scottish Cup last Saturday and McInnes said the player’s missed chance in injury time against the Hoops has been gnawing at the forward all week.

He said: “Adam is the kind of player who is disappointed every time he doesn’t score. Even though we won last week the first thing he said to me was he should have had three goals in three games.

“That was gnawing away at him and will have been like that all week until Saturday and he gets a chance to score another goal.

“I like that attitude in a forward.”

While Rooney is looking for more his manager is delighted with his contribution to the cause following his arrival from Oldham.

He said: “He enjoyed being part of a winning team, which is the most important thing, but attackers don’t enjoy it as much if they don’t score.

“There’s a selfishness to being a striker, all the top forwards have that streak in them. He’s certainly a player who will help us.

“We have forwards here who all want to play their part – and we’ve had others chip in from different areas of the park as well. Having everyone contributing is a big thing to have.”

Following their cup exploits, the Dons face a hectic run of matches.

Midweek games will be a regular feature in February, March and April for the Dons and McInnes knows his players face a gruelling test of their fitness.

He added: “Everyone has trained this week. We have a few little knocks but nothing significant. We have a lot of games coming up. I think it’s 11 games in seven weeks. So you have to be mindful of that and utilise the squad as best you can. So it’s good to have most players fit.

“Ryan Jack is still out, as are Clark Robertson and Craig Storey, but I’m hoping we should see them back on the training ground in the next couple of weeks.”
