Inverness has been hit by a pick-pocketing gang from Eastern Europe.
Police have received 12 reports from victims in the past three weeks and are advising members to be alert to this type of crime, which is comparatively rare in the north.
The incidents are reported to have happened in busy pedestrian areas including Faraline Park bus station, Falcon Square and busy retail premises throughout the area.
Crowded areas like shopping centres and bus and train stations, especially at rush hour, are key places where thieves operate, as well as at cash machines and in car parks.
Police are urging people to be aware and keep possessions safe in such areas as well as to maintain discretion with bank cards, mobiles, and other valuables like jewellery.
A spokesman said: “The alleged perpetrators are described as being Eastern European men, of muscular and medium build, between 5ft 10in and 6ft 2in in height, possibly with shaved heads or short hair, wearing dark clothing and beanie-style hats.
“Although crimes of pick-pocketing and theft are low within the Highlands and islands, knowing how and where criminals who commit these crimes operate will help you avoid falling victim to them.”
The spokesman added that anyone with information about the gang or who believes that they may have been offered stolen items, should report it to the police by calling 101.
Pick-pockets often work together with one causing a distraction while the other steals items.
Police in Inverness are also investigating a report of a theft by housebreaking which occurred over the weekend.
The incident, which involved money being stolen from the property, took place some time between 5pm on Friday, February 14 and 9.30am on Monday, February 17 in Union Road in the Crown area.
Police want to hear from anyone regarding any suspicious activity in the area, in particular between 8pm and 10.30pm on Saturday, February 15.
