Aberdeen Grammar will aim to take inspiration from the Granite City’s soccer team this weekend as they look to progress to the semi-finals of club rugby’s Scottish Cup.
The Rubislaw men travel to face Edinburgh Accies in the quarter-finals tomorrow, hoping to replicate the national cup form shown by the Dons.
The soccer club has been revitalised in reaching the League Cup final and the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup and Grammar head coach Kevin Wyness believes his troops can maintain the city’s feel-good factor.
He said: “There’s no doubt Aberdeen’s performance in the League Cup and last week’s victory against Celtic has lifted the spirits of the city as a whole and it’s fantastic to see the club doing so well.
“The Dons were triumphant on their last visit to the capital and we’ll be doing everything we can too be leaving Edinburgh on Saturday with our name firmly in the draw for the next round of the cup.
“Our cup form has been one of the positives from what has been a tough season and we’re looking to continue that in what will be a very difficult game against a good Accies side.
“On Saturday, we have a chance to put our relegation worries to one side for 80 minutes and it’s safe to say that we are fully committed to what is one of our biggest games of the season so far.”
Wyness will able to call on the services of Erlend Oag and Struan Cessford tomorrow, with both returning from duty with the Scotland club international squad.
Grammar have also confirmed that they will go back to take part in the Melrose Sevens, which this year take place at the Greenyards on April, 12.
Glasgow Warriors, French side Clermont Auvergne, Trinidad and Tobago and USA Tigers are among the sides also appearing.
Wyness added: “We’re delighted to be heading back to the Melrose Sevens again this year and we’re looking forward to pitting our wits against rugby heavyweights such as Clermont Auvergne and the Warriors.
“Last season, the guys had a great run to the semi-finals and we hold a number of fond memories of what is one of the best locations in Scotland in which to play rugby.”
