Speedy Rees at double

Alisha Rees brought the tally of national medals she has won this month up to four when scoring an impressive sprint double in the Scottish under-16 age group championships at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.

The Banchory Stonehaven AC runner won the 60m in 7.77sec, having also recorded 7.93 in her heat and 7.89 in the semi-final.

She then won the 200m in equally impressive style, recording 25.48 in the final to finish 0.69sec ahead of her nearest challenger. She also won her heat (26.89) and semi-final (26.41).

Rees’ double success matched her achievements in the Scottish Schools meeting at the same venue 10 days earlier when she equalled the championship records in both sprints.

Scottish schools silver medallist Georgia Summers (Aberdeen AAC) was also in excellent form when winning the 60m hurdles in a personal best time of 9.20sec.

Andrew McFarlane (Inverness Harriers) also struck silver when equalling his personal best of 1.20m in the high jump. He also finished fourth in the 60m in 9.41 after setting a personal best of 9.33 in the heats.

McFarlane’s club-mate Katie Stark added to the north medal collection by taking silver in the shot with a throw of 10.43m.

Aberdeen AAC’s Stewart Millar, the Scottish Schools champion, had to settle for third in the 800m, clocking 2:00.99 in a good quality race won by County Durham’s Markhim Lonsdale in 1:56.87 with Enfield’s George Conner second in 2:00.49.
